PHOENIX (July 26, 2023) – This August, Phoenix Art Museum will host virtual and in-person events, including Storytime in the Galleries, Night at the Museum, the next installment of summer film series Cine Cubano, and much more. PhxArt and Conceptually Social will officially open a new café experience named Temporary, featuring sandwiches, salads, pastries, and vegan and gluten-free options. The Museum has also premiered the 2023 Arizona Artist Awards exhibitionsGabriela Muñoz & Jenea Sanchez: Empowered Fronterizx Bodies and the 2023 Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards.
Temporary Café Opening Wednesday, August 2 Located in Orientation Gallery HOURS: Wednesday 9 am – 7 pm; Friday – Sunday 9 am – 3 pm Open to Museum guests only
PhxArt and Conceptually Social (@conceptuallysocialcatering) have partnered to open a café experience named Temporary, located in the Museum’s Orientation Gallery. Temporary will feature coffee, sandwiches, salads, and pastries, with vegan and gluten-free options. The café will be accessible to PhxArt visitors only.

The 2023 Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards Exhibition features works by emerging artists Yaritza Flores Bustos and Alejandro Macias. Bustos uses her interdisciplinary practice to create across media and develop a new archive that venerates the multiple languages her community utilizes to survive. Macias mixes conventional, representational, and abstract approaches, a strategy that acts as a metaphor for his upbringing along the U.S.-Mexico border. His work explores themes of Mexican-American identity, assimilation, acculturation, repression, civil rights, immigration, cultural misconceptions, contemporary socio-political trepidations, and the ever-shifting American political landscape.
Arizona Artist Awards are made possible by the Arlene and Morton Scult Artist Award and the Sally and Richard Lehmann Emerging Artists Award with additional support from Cattryn Somers and Michael Cafiso.

Juan Francisco Elso: Por América On view through September 17, 2023 Juan Francisco Elso: Por América explores the significant career of the late Cuban artist, whose sculptures and installations examine the complexities of contemporary Cuban, Caribbean, and Latin American identities. Fashioned from natural, organic materials, featured works draw influence from Indigenous traditions, Afro-Caribbean religious beliefs, and the traumas of colonial oppression and are placed in conversation with paintings, sculptures and more by a group of 30 multigenerational artists active in the Caribbean and throughout North, South, and Central America. Through this contextual approach, the traveling survey illuminates Elso’s legacy and articulates a more expansive idea of the Americas, free of geopolitical borders and boundaries.
Juan Francisco Elso: Por América is organized by El Museo del Barrio and guest curated by Olga Viso, curator-at-large at Phoenix Art Museum and senior advisor at Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, in collaboration with Susanna V. Temkin, curator at El Museo del Barrio. The exhibition is made possible thanks to major support from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Commissions are made possible by VIA Art Fund and the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation. FEATURED AUGUST EVENTS Cine Cubano – Soy Cuba (I am Cuba) Summer Film Series Sponsored by Lisa Sette Gallery August 2 | 6 pm Free for Members | $8 for the general public Presented in Whiteman Hall PhxArt presents Cine Cubano, a four-film series sponsored by Lisa Sette Gallery that complements special-engagement exhibition Juan Francisco Elso: Por América and celebrates Cuba’s rich history and culture through the medium of cinema. All films are presented in Spanish with English subtitles.
Visually absorbing and formally audacious, Soy Cuba (I Am Cuba) opens a long-buried time capsule that explores Cuba’s 1959 revolution. A young woman’s fascination with the excess of an American-owned casino leads to her downfall. A tenant farmer revolts the only way he knows how. University students gain first-hand knowledge of political upheaval. Members of a poor family are patriotically swept up into the burgeoning revolt in the hills outside the city. Fresh Dressed is a captivating chronicle of hip-hop, urban fashion and the rise of oversized pants and graffiti-drenched jackets from southern cotton plantations. Hear in-depth interviews with rappers, designers, and other industry insiders, including Pharrell Williams, Damon Dash, Karl Kani, Kanye West, Nasir Jones, and André Leon Talley. The result is a passionate telling of the reach for freedom of expression and a better life by a culture that refused to be squashed and, through sheer originality and swagger, took over the mainstream. Designed for our youngest PhxArt visitors (ages 0-5) and their parents or caregivers, Storytime in the Galleries is a wonderful opportunity to share the joy of early literacy, art-inspired play, and hands-on learning with family and friends. The Storytime in the Galleries series is offered on the first Wednesday of each month inside the Museum. In August, join Childsplay teaching artist Ms. Nickela for an interactive Storytime where the art in the Museum and the art on the page will come to life as we move, play, and learn. This month’s story is Dress Up and Let’s Have a Party by Remy Charlip. Tickets are available for reservation here.

Feldman roamed Hollywood Boulevard’s gritty, grubby stretch in the early 1970s, documenting those attracted to the Hollywood myth. Weekly Virtual Mindfulness Sessions August 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 | Noon Free for Members | $5 suggested donation for the general public Scientific studies show the art of mindfulness can relieve anxiety, depression, pain, and stress and actually change the way we feel, think, work, and play by opening new pathways in the brain. Presented in collaboration with Hospice of the Valley, this free, 30-minute, at-home mindfulness session promotes living in the present. Lemon Library Lecture: Fashion Resources August 9 | 6 pm Free for Members and the general public Presented in the Lemon Art Research Library The Gene and Cathie Lemon Art Research Library has a wide and unique variety of fashion resources available, including the Astaire Library of Costume and Fashion, which houses a near full run of iconic fashion magazines like Vogue, Vogue France, Harper’s BAZAAR, and GQ. The Lemon Library also collects counterculture fashion publications like Japanese street fashion magazine FRUiTS.
